Taking care of business…and radio batteries

Batteries. Identify your battery type.

There are three main types of batteries for Two Way Radios: Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd), Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH), and Lithium Ion (Li-Ion). Li-Ion batteries, the most recent battery chemical technology, are the lightest of all batteries, an attractive feature to many users.

Caring for your batteries

1. Try to stabilize your radio batteries at room temperature (72oF) before charging for best results.

2. New NiCd and NiMH batteries should be charged for around 15 hours before first use. This is also known as initializing your battery. Li-Ion batteries should be charged for 1-2 additional hours after the light on the charge turns green.

3. Only charge your radio batteries when it needs it.

If you have to store batteries:

Store batteries in a cool, well ventilated, dry location. NiCd batteries can be stored up to two years while NiMH and Li-Ion batteries can be stored for 18 months under these conditions.

Radio batteries aren’t hard to take care of but if you don’t follow these steps a battery can die well before its time and that’s not cost effective for you.

Discover How Long Will a Two Way Radio Battery Last?

Rechargeable two way radio batteries can last through hundreds or thousands of charge cycles, depending on how often and for how long the battery is used. But any and all types of two way radio batteries have a finite lifespan. Whether or not a battery is used, over time it will slowly lose some of its storage capacity, due to internal chemical reactions and other factors.
